B. Your home is where?
C. I live in Mallorca, Spain.

B. When and how did you first become interested in art?
C. errr....I draw since I was a kid.

B. Is anyone else in your family artistic?
C. I think my father drew when he was a kid, but like all children I suppose. My mother played guitar and my grandfather the violin, but in arts nobody stands out, to my knowledge.

B. Who are your main influences?
C. My greatest influence was my drawing teacher (marcos mateu) but actually I have no great influence.

B. What has been your biggest project to date?
C. Draw the whole Moleskine! ajajajaja, no...seriously, now Im thinking for the final career project, but for now I only have loose ideas...

B. If you had to save just one of your works (hypothetically speaking), which would it be?
C. Anyone...

B. What are you working on at the moment?
C. Im working as a graphic designer for a little packaging and comunication company called BdeB. Ahhh, and Im finishing my design studies at EDIB.

B. Which piece of your own artwork are you most proud of?
C. hummmmm, if I hace to choose one....a illustration of a woman on a black background...[link]

B. What is your favoured medium?
C. I think I still haven't found...wacom and photoshop are very comfortable, but a pencil is more personal...I dont know, I dont know...

B. And to end, a trivial question; Your favourite film of all time, please?
C. Hahahahah, I must say that Im not a movie fan, I like a lot The machinist, Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, ...typical? :P

Hi, Mattias.

B. Your home is where?
M. Sigtuna outside of Stockholm Sweden

B. When and how did you first become interested in art?
M. I've been interested in Illustration as a small boy, when reading comics and books

B. Is anyone else in your family artistic?
M. My mother went to art school when she was young, she didn't pursue it though but worked with other things, my father was an excellent sketcher while young but he came from a poor background and did not educate in that field. My sister works as a graphic designer at Swedens largest child publisher

B. Who are your main influences?
M. Of a rather strict European origin my largest influence while a boy was OA (Oscar Andersson turn of the last century artist) an excellent artist and a great humorist unfortunately he decided to end his life prematurely

B. What has been your biggest project to date?
M. The largest by far was the computer game I did after I left art school building on my thesis work, can't say it turned into a great game though.

B. If you had to save just one of your works(hypothetically speaking), which would it be?
M. Hard to say but maybe this spread called autumn, I feel for the budgie

B. What are you working on at the moment?
M. I'm finishing two rather large project one children's book and one an assignment for a Swedish museum

B. Which piece of your own artwork are you most proud of?
M. That awaits to be finished, but I'm rather proud of this it's part of the children's book project I'm working on

M. ink and watercolor I do not vary myself much I'm afraid

Bound in Italian leather, the Ciak retails at a very reasonable £9.99 - the same as you pay for a pocket Molesine in most places. Size wise, it is smaller in height than the Moleskine by 1cm, but with the width remaining the same at 9cm, the proportions aren't quite as pleasing to the eye. Page count is debatable; The Journal Shop has it down as 110 sheets, but I have seen it listed on other sites as the same as the Moleskine (192).

When I discovered the Ciak, it was after years of devotion to the Moleskine, but I really wanted to give it a go. From the images available online, it looks beautiful. In fact, its design ticks more of the 'perfect notebook' boxes than even the Moleskine. It has a softcover (Moleskine were not doing softcovers at the time), it's bound in leather and it's the right size(ish). So I dutifully coughed up my tenner and waited. When it arrived I was not disappointed, initially at least. But the fact that now, almost 3 yrs on, it still sits unused on my desk, should tell us something. Ironically, the Ciak's main downfall is in the one area I thought it would excel... it's flexibility (or lack of, more to the point). The leather simply isn't soft enough, and opening the thing up to try and write is nigh on impossible. It really is that stiff. I've tried crunching it up, flapping it about, bending it this way and that, in the hope of loosening up the leather, all to no avail... I still need a car jack to get in. I think the picture below must have been achieved by nailing the cover down.

Build quality, however, appears to be very high indeed. The leather is of a fairly good standard (despite its stiffness), paper is creamy off-white and lined to within a centimeter or so of the page edges (as opposed to Moleskine's edge to edge formatting). The lines also stop proud of page-top and bottom by a good half inch.
The elastic closure is of a better quality than the Moleskine's too, fitted horizontally instead of vertically. Two little triangular nicks in the front and back cover edges keep the closure neatly in place.

At the time of my purchase, the Ciak also came with a small pen, attached to the notebook by a little moulded loop on the front edge of the back cover. I wasn't keen on this at all, and was able to slice it away using a craft knife, without leaving any sign of damage.
An absolutely beautiful looking notebook, but with just one too many flaws.
